Independent producers have a lot of disadvantages... foremost, the lack of credible specialists to take care of details, like cinematography, set design, lighting, editing, etc.  Anyone can do these things passably, but it's deceptively difficult to do them professionally.

The only reason some memes (Ze Frank, Ask a Ninja, Kiwi!) are so brilliant, and do so well, without any corporate backing, is that their creators are deeply passionate about their personal project.  These networks are clearly trying to harness this indie dedication, but doing so through a contest is a sure-fire way to guarantee failure.  You basically rule out the one X-Factor that allows the genius to happen: independent personal investment in the idea that's being expressed.</description>
